Earth Week at Yorba Linda High – Day 2: Painting with Purpose

2–3 minutes

Elemental Earth Union CLUB

April 23, 2025 — The second day of Earth Week at Yorba Linda High School, organized by Elemental Earth Union, was filled with color, creativity, and conversation. As students returned to the courtyard for another 30-minute lunch activity, the message was clear: every student has a voice in shaping the future of our planet.

From Rocks to Stories

Yesterday’s stone painting table had already sparked a wave of interest—and today, it evolved. Dozens of new stones appeared, this time more expressive, more symbolic. Some students painted characters, some shared inside jokes, while others wrote heartfelt messages to friends, to nature, or even to themselves.

“Lovely Vishakha – Hope to see ya ~”

“Hamilton from Nina – Keep going.”

These weren’t just decorations—they were stories, reminders, affirmations. They stayed on the table, not as decorations, but as testaments of connection, between students and the Earth, and between each other.

Posters That Pop

Meanwhile, a second table welcomed students to grab bright markers and add their voices to a collaborative Earth Week board. The result? A large, bold poster shouting:

  • “SAVE THE EARTH”
  • “BIODEGRADABLE”
  • “REUSABLE”
  • “ENVIRO-FRIENDLY”

Alongside the text were drawings of the Earth, green arrows, and even biodegradable pens—the exact ones participants received yesterday as a reward.

This activity was more than art. It was youth-led messaging, turning facts into fun, and transforming abstract concepts into colorful calls to action.

A Week in Motion

Earth Week isn’t just about one event. It’s a series. And today proved that students are not only willing—but eager—to show up again and again when they know it matters.

Coming up:

  • Wednesday (Day 3): “Green Mural Day” – A large paper mural where every student can draw or write what “Green Begins With Us” means to them.
  • Thursday (Day 4): Trash Sorting Quiz + Rewards – Learn what goes in which bin, and win a biodegradable pen for getting it right!
  • Friday: Earth Week Showcase – Final day display of rocks, posters, mural, and live seed planting kits.

Reflections from Today

We witnessed more than participation—we saw pride. One student drew the Earth with leaves growing out of it and said:

“It’s my way of showing that we can bring the Earth back to life.”

Another said:

“I didn’t think I’d care about this stuff, but I kinda do now.”

That’s the goal. Not to force action, but to invite it. Through paint, pens, paper, and passion.
